He gave most lensmen a miss at the shooting of Mani Ratnam’s Raavana. And the only reason for the miss was the complete transformation of Nikhil from the boy-next-door look in My Name is Anthony Gonsalves to the tough cop in Ratnam’s film. “Even Ram Gopal Varma couldn’t recognise me when we met recently,” the actor recalls.
Shooting at the Kolkata station or with Ash on a boat on the Ganga has been a lifetime experience. In a world where people don’t care a damn about others, the actor is heartened to know that “there is a city that has a tendency to adopt people”.
Ask him about his tough-cop looks when he plays Vikram’s deputy, and he says, “Though I didn’t get much time to work on my body post signing the film, I’m happy to be looking fit. It’s a divine opportunity to have got a film with Mani Sir now. He taught me how to play a role unassumingly. Every actor should pray that he gets one chance to do a one-scene role in his film!”
Few know that Nikhil has also worked with Ash in a professional capacity before he joined films. “I used to be an employee of a corporate house which had signed on Ash for their promotions. Even then, I used to know her as a courteous and unassuming lady. That impression has carried forward even while shooting with her here. This was my first meeting with Abhishek. I used to hear that he is a polite gentleman. I experienced it for the first time. He makes the first move to make every actor comfortable on the sets,” he adds.
What’s even more interesting is that Nikhil seems to have some kind of a professional connection with the Bachchans now. “I play Jaya Bachchan’s son in Revathy’s movie that also stars Genelia. She has been a natural actor when all those actors were used to playing the stereotype,” he says.
With so many Bachchans as his co-stars, does he see himself inching closer to his dream of sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan? “I’ve been a die-hard fan of his. That’s a latent desire of every actor. I’m hoping that my dream comes true soon!”
