Nominated for Oscars in the best foreign film category, Lagaan has been the first Indian Movie to be chosen for the Academy awards. Ashutosh Gowarikar through the direction of this film could prove his exceptional qualities in direction, whereas Anil Mehta succeeded in providing just befitting outfits to all characters of the film depicting the old village Champaner in close vicinity of the 1893 British Cantonment assisting Nitin Desai and Bhanu Athaiya to emphatically work on simulating with a century old environment. AR Rehman’s compositions and background music fits in very well with the old situations showing his just brilliance. The lyrics by Javed Akhtar are just superb.
The film unfolds with a draught hit village Champaner reeling under the British Umpire which inspite of almost no rain during the season, imposes double tax on the villagers. The Maharaja (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) expresses his inability to help the villagers inspite of all his sympathies with them due to Britishers’ effect on the Maharaja. That results into a hot conversation between Bhuven(Aamir Khan) a hot headed native youth of the village, with the British Captain Russel who proposes a cricket match with the villagers and if the villagers won the match he would waive off the double tax imposed on them for the next three years, but if in case the match is lost by the villagers they would pay the same tax in triple amount.
Bhuven motivates and starts training of his cricket eleven amongst the village youths who forgetting all differences of caste, creed and race get together in solidarity with Bhuven. The British actress Rachel Shelly in the role of Ms Elizabeth looks impressive. The simplicity in which the set of the village has been portrayed it just looks awesome. Another foreign actor Paul Blackthrone in the role of Captain Russel, too, look impressive in his role.
Finally the big cricket match ensues and with lot of climax and suspense the village team headed by Bhuven wins the match with most tense situations created by the collective effort of the Director and his team of actors and other crew. Lagaan keeps the audience totally glued with their seats for about four hours. It attracts a common man from the street due to his own semblance with the characters of Lagaan. Its classic relationship with the Indian audience is their proximity with the Indian Cricket as a whole. This interest further multiplies since the rural masses are broadly aware of various nuances of cricket.
A classic must see Indian movie.

""Lagaan" is anything but standard Bollywood fodder, and is the first must-see of the Indian summer. A movie that will have you laughing and crying, but leaving with a smile. " BBC
