Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy 27 dresses’ focuses of a lovely female youth Jane (Katherine Heigl) in a typical self effacing role who secretly loves her boss George (Adward Burns), but fails in openly revealing his romantic feelings with him. Even Jane’s personal attention towards George, such as bringing his favourite burrito everyday from home does not imply any love signals for the latter. Interestingly, Jane is habitual of meticulously recollecting minute details all the weddings of her twenty seven girlfriends where she had voluntarily assisted as bridesmaid in each marriage ceremony she attended so far. In her wardrobe she has a nice collection of more than two dozen beautiful bridesmaid gowns which itself prove her rare collections of such items. As a matter of fact she has developed fantastic fantasies about marriage which she had thought for her boss George. But all her dreams get totally shattered when her sister Tess (Malin Akerman) joins her and starts making romantic advances towards George. The story of the film takes a new turn and Jane starts feeling herself totally sidelined within no time of the love she had imbibed in herself for her enduring one sided relationship of love with her boss.
Meanwhile, a newspaper wedding columnist Kevin(James Marsden) manages to pin down Jane after having come to know about Jane’s fate of her failure in the love battle and the obsession of wedding she carries with her since long. It appears that the film leaves ample scope to rejuvenate the character of the belligerent wedding columnist Kevin as the script writer could have certainly worked on dialogues to further prod Jane’s affection towards George and her apathy of not revealing her love to George and latter’s ignorance in sensing love signals of Jane.
Anne Fletcher’s direction is quite digestible. However Aline Brosh McKenna perhaps could not reach the expectations in scriptwriting as the script appears frothy in several scenes. However the collection of excellent variety of twenty seven wedding dresses is apparently appraise worthy research by the director and that certainly gives a festive look to the film. But the actual romance or fun which the audience always tend to explore while viewing a film, finds it almost absent in the entire run up to the film and the prime focus of the story tilts towards agony and restlessness of the main protagonist Jane.
Casey (Judy Creer) has certainly done a fantastic role as Jane’s friend which could be the best role in the film. Though kudos also go to Katherine Heigl for her indifferent role of Jane which she through her experience manages to justify to a large extent.
The overall direction of the film justifies the essential requirements of the story liner and Anne Fletcher proves herself emphatic in her approach towards justifying the direction mode for a tough subject such as twenty seven dresses as she very successfully meets the desired nuances of the heavy script.
An interesting movie to watch.

"A futile effort, like most of the rest of the movie, or the attempt to find anything else to say about it." THE NEW YORK TIMES

Wesley Morris
"Anne Fletcher, and the screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, who did such a smart job adapting "The Devil Wears Prada," have made a ditsy single-chick movie with the alluring geometry of a screwball comedy." THE BOSTON GLOBE
