A cautionary tale, this chilling little film could teach ‘The Skeleton Key’ a thing or two about creating an unsettling atmosphere in a house, even though it's aimed at a much younger audience. The film opens showing an eerie-looking orphanage with a sinister air lingering around it. This foreshadowing of oncoming evil further adds to the gloom that runs through the movie.

Emily (Chloe Smyth) has fallen out with younger brother Timmy (the improbably named Beans Balawi). As an orphan full of bitterness, she becomes irritable and Timmy’s happiness begins to get to her. Out of sheer annoyance, she curses Timmy saying “I hope you’re never happy again.” Unintentionally, she calls upon an evil sprite who feeds upon people’s happiness. Boyes’ depiction of the arrival of the sprite makes you wonder how relevant the words ‘be careful what you wish for’ are.

The Happiness Thief bears a striking likeness to the child-snatcher Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Characterized much in the way of the child-snatcher, he guiles Timmy into believing that he is a magician and with an ominous glass pipe sucks the happiness out of his heart. Roused from the corner where she scuttled off to out of sheer annoyance of Timmy’s laughter, Emily takes on the Happiness Thief to get back her brother’s happiness and ends up spreading happiness throughout.

This wonderful short film by Derek Boyes very simply tells the importance of happiness to everybody. It has a style all of its own, the cinematography is lovely and the acting great. Brooke is perfectly Puck-like and the relationship between Emily and Timmy tangible.

Watching this delightful film, I'm impressed that it checks very few of the boxes currently flooding the short film arena. It's for children, it's sentimental, it's magical, it wouldn't be out of place as an episode of Jim Henson's The Storyteller. There are no gangsters, no single mums on heroin, not a kitchen sink in sight. But a slew of filmmakers, critics and individuals from Stephen Frears to Working Title seem to have fallen under its charms. Frears may have commented playfully about the film being 'ridiculously soppy', but by gum there was a tear in this reviewer's eye by the end.
