Marriages have always been built in a sort of paradise, a certain sense of bliss – well most of the time. One such incident or rather marriage was that of cutting-edge visual techniques, heart-warming performances, 1960s history and the Beatles in a movie called Across the Universe. A musical that takes you on a ride that a lot of movies fail to do, a journey through Himalaya sort of altitudes and deep down inside the minds of a perfect executioner of a movie on level of class that goes on to make what we have come to be known as excellence per-sonified.
Across the Universe as its name does have a plot, but all said and done it is not one of those druggy movies that were straight out of the 1960’s. The only thing grunge to this movie is probably the fact that it has Joe Cocker in it. One thing that takes the cake for me in this killer movie is the fact that there is no date put to the movie, so in all probability the movie could be happening now.
The plot of across the universe runs into the veins of the Beatles, with most of the characters named after songs by the Beatles like Lucy, Jude (Jim Sturgess), and Lucy's brother, Max (Joe Anderson). All these characters share a pad in Greenwich Village with their musician friends, the Hendrixian Jo-Jo (Martin Luther McCoy), the Joplinesque Sadie (Dana Fuchs) and the lovelorn Prudence (T.V. Carpio). The story moves on when Jude and Lucy fall in love with a ride on Dr. Robert's Magic Bus with doctor (Bono) and Mr. Kite (Eddie Izzard). The story takes another twist for the good when Max goes off to Vietnam fuelling an anti-war movement.
Across the Universe does lack its share of dialogue. The plotting of this movie is right on point with songs like “I wanna hold your hand” becoming this sad song (you’ll just have to watch the movie to know why). I mean a band and a force like The Beatles have been around since my dad’s long hair days and yet these British guys have the ability to kick some mean arse with their songs from almost 50 years ago.
In a time when even Lennon was crying about Nam, across the universe shoots you in the head from point blank range, just that the bullets are flowers and the gun powder is psychedelia that titillates you to death.
