Is it fiction that drives facts, or is it factual things that drive fiction. Only once in while Indian cinema serves you with such delicacies like Rang De Basanti.

Rakeysh Om Prakash the director of the film has really worked hard on this film, and then you have Aamir Khan who is known to make his writers and directors work hard on subjects. Everybody in the film industry knows he’s really choosy about the stories he works on.

The basic premise of the story about this British girl Sue whose planning to make a film based on his grandfathers dairy notes, but her research over the subject goes down the drains when the she’s left stranded by her production house chief who briefs Sue that the subject won’t do well with the masses.

“Tumhari maa ki aankh” she says as her blood boils out of pain.

Next thing…she’s out there on her own in India after quitting her job. I have a strong feeling this character SUE was developed mainly to showcase the film overseas and to make the plot is more UK/USA friendly. Sue makes friends with these college going youngsters while making the film on her own. All of a sudden she sees her characters coming to life with the same people she was having fun with.

I love the way the camera tells the story in the film. The strength of the film lies in its storyboarding. Otherwise the collage of the PAST meets the TODAY wouldn’t have come out so well.

Hats off to A R Rehman for composing such beautiful songs of course he had Prasoon Joshi to work with who is the lyricist of the film. Fantastic screenplay and amazing dialogues…this film actually makes a rebel out of a sissy.

Great performances by everybody but watching Anupam Kher was a bit disappointment for me…he’s the only one who gave a mediocre performance. It looked as if he was not a bit interested in his part.

The film is patriotic in nature…a sudden shock comes in with the death of DJ’s friend Madhvan who plays an Airforce pilot. The whole plot seems to be hijacked from Sue’s perspective and the story now turns into a revengeful mode. The college boys turn into rebels as they seek revenge from the people who are directly or indirectly responsible for this heinous crime…

Rang De Basanti is a classic patriotic tragedy which totally takes control over your nerves as it reaches its climax. Go watch this film today to really get an insight into what Indian society is really about…

I rate this film with four and half stars out of five…

On the whole, RANG DE BASANTI will have its share of advocates and adversaries. A well-made film, it caters more to the elite and the thinking viewer than the aam junta or the masses.

The tag line of the film says it all, A generation awakens. This is an attempt to awaken the generation X to the reality, to encourage them to make a difference without giving lengthy lectures and preaches on patriotism and nationalism. So, does the film succeed in doing so..?? Well to a large extent it does. The film manages to invoke the feeling for the nation without any heavy dose of loud hardcore patriotic dialogues. The film is a good mix of fun and message. It delivers the message without loosing the essential fun factor. Amir Khan's one liners keep you alive all through. As expected Amir Khan steals the show but the second leads stand out as well with some good performances. Cinematography, direction and screenplay are of first grade. This one also marks A R Rehman's return to form with some marvellous songs and background score. I would have rated it 10/10 only if the climax was handled a bit better. The end of the story leaves a lot to be desired and the moral of the story is not very clear by its climax. A genuine, honest and good attempt nevertheless. See it and feel good, feel proud and feel moved.
