If the word ‘evergreen’ ever had a life, it would be 6ft tall, with a French beard and would look like Amitabh Bachchan. The man is like wine, which improves in quality and taste as it grows older. Probably our answer to the French viners? Too far-fetched? Not really, if you have the slightest idea of whom we are talking about. At 64, he can make girls of my (by the way I am 22) age go weak in the knees, a feat he has already achieved with finesse on-screen. He set the screen ablaze and tongues wagging when he romanced Jiah Khan fit to be his granddaughter and did a replay of sorts when he appeared with another stalwart Tabu in Cheeni Kum. The movie has Amitabh (as Buddhadev Gupta) playing a 64 year old Chef and becoming the proud owner of a tiny choti (pony tail) that became the talk of the town. He is shown as this uncompromising, sharp, witty and sometimes an excessively impulsive man who will not think twice before firing an employee or for that matter offending a customer. He is at his sharpest best with Tabu, a smart 34 year old (as Nina Verma) who happens to tell him that his Hyderabadi Zafrani Pulao has too much sugar. He is taken aback when the next day tabu brings him the real Hyderabadi Zafrani Pulao with no sugar, which he praises to the skies unbeknownst of the fact that it’s not by his cooks but Tabu. Our oldie faces the heat this time and is swept off his feet by this unassuming woman. Their accidental face-offs lead to planned encounters and their realtionship metamorphs into a serious one. The scene where Amitabh walks upto the chemist and asks for a protection is well, funny. Sexy (Swini Khara) is a 9 year old kid, who is sharp beyond her age and draws everyone in her circle of life which happens to be cut short by leukemia. She acts like Buddhadev’s mother, guide and is acutely adorable. Equally lovable is Zohra Sehgal who plays Amitabh’s sharp-tongued mother and delievers an unforgettable performance. The moment you feel that the couple are blessed, Lady Luck chooses to disagree and in comes the lady’s father Mr.Verma played by Paresh Rawal. He is shocked to hear Buddhadev’s feelings towards his daughter. Like any doting father, he refuses to let Nina marry him so much so when the two seem unrelenting to him he goes on a hunger strike. What follows is a delight to watch. Who wins in the end in this battle of emotions, well the lies answer within a cd. A feel good movie, it has been nicely crafted and leaves no disconnect what so ever. Go ahead, watch it if you haven’t and infact a second time is also not bad. Happy viewing!!!
