Kajol was also supposed to play a lead in the film but was unable to work out dates so the role went to Kareena Kapoor.

The shoot of the film with the supporting characters began on July 28, 2008. Hirani and his team left in late August for the shoot with the principal cast. The film was shot in Ladakh (with some parts at The Druk White Lotus School ), Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai as well. Aamir and rest of the cast began shooting in early September. Hirani plans to wrap up the film by December. The first scene was shot in an aircraft with Madhavan. From Mumbai, the crew and cast comprising Aamir and Kareena will head off to Ladakh for a 20-day schedule.

Three Idiots is the tentative title for Rajkumar Hiranis upcoming film starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film is based on a famous novel, Five Point Someone by Indian writer Chetan Bhagat. However, the story is completely different but will be set in an engineering college. Vidhu Vinod Chopra will be producing the film whilst Abhijat Joshi and Raju Hirani have written the screenplay. The films soundtrack will be composed by Shantanu Moitra with lyrics penned by Swanand Kirkire.
