The film is the story of a strange and loving relationship between King Ashoka, played by Amitabh Bachchan, and his son Veera Kunal, played by Arjun Rampal. The film is set in 240 BC and starts when the emperor converted to Buddhism. Another angle to the film is Tabus sexual attraction towards stepson Rampal who is married to Amrita Rao, playing Kanchanmala. While Tabu plays a woman suffering from sexual despair, the two spouses, Amitabh and Amrita are silent onlookers.
Kunal, named after a Himalayan bird with beautiful eyes, was born a year before the great war of Kalinga ended. There are conflicting documentations on what happened to him during his growing up as a prince. He was blinded by one of King Ashokas wives, Tishyaraksha.
A film Veer Kunal (1925) was a semi-fictionalized portrayal of Kunals life.
