Ravana Trivia

The title of the film is tentative. An alternative title is Ashokavanam.

The shoot was disrupted for a short time on orders by the Kerala Forest department in early October when the forest officials found that some huts were constructed in the prohibited areas of the forest, violating the terms of their contract. The crew was later given permission to continue filming.

Hollywood stunt master Peter Hains who choreographed the action scenes of 'Dhoom' will supervise the fight scenes in the film.

The cast of the film has been sworn to secrecy.

The film is to be made in Tamil and Hindi. The Tamil version of the film will also be dubbed in Telgu.

Ravana Media Reviews

Wikipedia
Raavan is a Hindi language film directed by Mani Ratnam set to be released in 2009. It stars Vikram,Abhishek Bachchan,Aishwarya Rai,Govinda and Ravi Kishan in the Hindi version. It is also being made in simultaneously in Tamil as Ashokavanam with a slightly different cast.

Mani Ratnam is reportedly producing a present day version of the Indian epic Ramayana which tells the story of Rama, whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon (Rakshasa) king of Lanka, Ravana.Mani Ratnam had earlier directed Thalapathi which bore a close resemblance to the Mahabharata.

While details of the films are closely guarded and pictures from the film set are yet to be revealed there have been numerous reports and speculations on the casting of both the films.
It was earlier reported that Abhishek Bachchan was cast as the protagonist based on Rama and Vikram would be portraying the title character based on Ravana.More recent reports have Abhishek portraying the role of Ravana and Vikram playing Rama. There are conflicting reports on the role Vikram is playing in the Tamil Version Ashokavanam. While earlier sources report Vikram playing Rama and Prithviraj Sukumaran portraying Ravana, more recent speculations are that Vikram plays Ravana while Prithviraj is Rama.
Aishwarya Rai plays a contemporary Sita, appearing as an accomplished Carnatic Musician in both versions of Mani Ratnam's films.
Govinda plays a forest officer who takes Vikram's character through the forests in search of a wanted criminal. While it was earlier speculated that it was a contemporary version of Hanuman,Govinda refutes the claim.Karthik Muthuraman plays the character in Ashokavanam.
Ravi Kishan and Ajay Gehi are reported to play characters based on Ravana’s brothers Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana.Prabhu Ganesan plays the character of Vibhishana in Ashokavanam.
A recent article in The Times of India mentions Tejaswini Kolhapure playing a pivotal role in Raavan.

BULL SHIT MOVIE. JUST BECAUSE ABHISHEK AND ASHWARYA ARE ACTING DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT HAS TO BE A GOOD MOVIE. 150 MINS IS TOOOOOOOOO LONG. DON'T TEST THE PATIENCE OF THE VIEWERS. NOT WORTH RATING.

Did Raavan reach our expectations? Not even close. Actually, it's miles below a average movie.
Other than some aesthetic photography, Raavan was absolute nonsense. If someone can highlight few less eminent incidents like the Soorpanaka chapter or Rama's inherent doubts, just to make the villain great, it is blasphemy. Evil blown out of proportion.
And please; I am not someone who is 'less' intellectual. When someone twists facts to fit one's theories, even Ayn Rand or Nietzche won't pacify with them.
Do yourself a favour, do NOT watch Raavan. Forget that such a movie ever released and carry on.
P.S. Mani Rathnam, here's an advice. Please retire gracefully or watch your beautiful films again a hundred times.Man,you let us down.

A cinematic extravaganza.Abhishek is 'dangerously beautiful',Ash as Ragini is ethereal, poetic and vulnerable.Vikram is brilliantly focussed.Govinda's potentials tapped after a long time.Ravi Kishen is pure raw talent. But,all in all,the film belongs to Beera.Mani Ratnam's heart and soul gets reflected in every frame.Sivan&Manikanda's cinematography is beyond words. The art-director deserves the highest cinematic award.Rehman's music and score, creates the perfect ambience-welcome to the surreal Beera's world. There can't be a better adapttion of Ramayan-than this,if at all I can say this to be one. After certain time-I could hear the waterfalls(as if flowing by my side),I could get hold on the creepers, the rapids would engulf me.There was a sense of delusion-kudos to the DOP.The writing is tight. The editing is smooth&savvy. The locations are perfectly chosen.Few scenes made me wonder-how it was canned?A lot of effort by the whole team.First time in my life,I saw a full-house in pin-drop...

The tamil version rocked .. Excellent acting by Vikram.. And those who saw said Sure movie of the year in south.. I heard Abhishek wasnt upto the level for that character in Hindi and Vikram doing injustification to the Dev character and got many negative reviews from friends who saw the hindi version. People who saw both tell me where there was a blunder in Hindi although all the scenes were same except the castings...

I am blindly going to sit for this movie without asking any reviews and comments. Because maniratnam movie, surely will be having something. Usually maniratnam movies wont be understandable and wont be knowing its depth when u see first time. Later point of time only we will realize the works and risks taken by him one by one. All big shots have gathered and it should be a good treat for us !!!!!!

This is by far one of the most sane reviews..... i went for the london premiere and i thought i ll send good reviews after the movie well mani sir has let us down..... (btw i went for the tamil version and i am hesitant to go for the hindi version)
1.Good part of the movie the cinematography.... For most of u ll who have not been checking out the cinematography section i believe the major contribution was by manikandan and the other was santhosh sivan...

2. Editing was fantastic brilliantly placed shots and brilliant colour correction

3. Rahman's songs it was obviously one of the epic soundtracks he has done.

4. vikram as ravanan was mental

5. Art direction was something to talk about

Bad parts

1. Boring script by the shahensha of filmaking..

2. Ash was useless.... they should have got a better actress... Mani sir shouldnt have gone for beauty he should have gone for acting... I would have chosen tabu or madubala for this role.

3. I am sorry although being an ar fan i was let down by the score for the movie... Jodhaa akber was by far his best background score-- this movie had nothing special...

4. ok something about vikram.. if u actually are happy about vikram's acting.... please go watch pithamagan,sethu,kasi..... He is by far one of the greatest actors in tamil cinema after kamal hassan... this was just something what he can do regularly...

anyways thats about it.... its just my opinion... going to any indian film i switch of my brains and sit in the theater... Except for some directors like mani ratnam i sit almost glued to the screen.. he has failed miserably... after 5 years i this was just " all froth and no beer"... no offense sir..... i know film-making is tough u need to

Hi Ppl...
Its nice to see your reviews...

Have seen some of them wer not happy with the film... First of all they should know the theme of the director. We all have seen movies where the first song will be in Australia, second song will be some wer near Newzealand etc... Is it worth? I think you ppl love to watch some colorful stuff like that. No one will vote against Mani... When ever we thought abt director the first thing comes in our mind is Maniratnam. Its became nature. He hasn't finished it yet, still years to go. I'll say thanks to Raj tv and K tv for playing to movie Thalapathi atleast 1ce in a month, have see the film some 70 times, still eager to watch it... First of all the directot should have Guts to select a film which has a epic back ground. And if anyone dare to do that, you ppl will curse him... Not good. Mani Ratnam, hats off to you... You gonna rock the whole Indian Cinema as you did in the past... Dnt worry, we are here. Then please arrange a project with Rajni again. Waiting for Thalapathi 2, please make it soon, otherwise these new ppl will remake it with Dhanush or Jeyam Ravi... Just kidding.

This ll be one of the best movie ever made.
It justified my money and time. This is one top class movie which meets international standards.
Finally a movie that ll make all Indians Proud. Wat an adaptation, Style and making!!!
Really hats off to all the technicians and Crew especially to Mani sir for such a perspective.
BGM was great and the end title song was a special treat.
The cinematography of raavanan will be one Indian industries best, which will definitely catch so many eyes all around the globe.

Such a different attempt will always have both types of reviews. But not to worry the majority will always be on the side of a visionary who tries to make a landmark.

VIKRAM, Where have u been hiding so long?? Wat a performance.
Really justified performance after a gape. This is the VIKRAM Which all had been expecting so long.
Keep up the great work.

Finally this movie brings pride to the Indian film industry.

Just returned after watching late night show, My Comments:
1. Beautiful picturisation - ( the art director should get award)
2. Location- excellent
3. Story- Poor
4. Acting- Aish did well, Abhi was ok and Vikram was cool.
Was expecting more but was disappointed.
Watch this movie only once and that too for the Location and excellent camera work.

Raavan Review: I dont understand what to say... 1st hour the whole movie goes in slow motion..U can actually notice every sequence in slow movement...... even aish dances full slow in one of the songs...n has grown old.. atleast in kites u could have seen Barbera..rest--the entire concept is very poor.... unnecessary dialogues by abhishek will confirm that he acts best when not allowed to speak..go for it if ur really crazy and want to torture urself for the day.... :p !!!

I like the concept. Its all about Good Character, Bad character & Circumstances. Cleverly, director leave the decision on audience to judge between good n bad. If you leave bit of mixing and twist then this is actual story of Ramayana.

On top of this Music, Cinematography, location put some extra mark to this movie. I really like role of 'Mangal' played by Ravikishan. He has shown his great potential of acting. Aish is looking as before, Abhishek has also done well except bit of overdrama but he would have done what director asked him to do. Overall a different movie with different story.

Ravan aka Ravanan is Disaster.

Mr.Maniratnam, with all due respect quit film making. u cant take a movie with 80's story in mind. you are better off sticking to copying formula/twisted biography. why subject us to 3 hours of non stop non sense?!

bakwas and third class . why this people are making such pictures ? from where money is coming to throw away in this type of thrid grade film.

very poor and ugly film. not good for seeing with family.

is ashwariya rai know acting ? or she is only a pin up girl ( Bahu ) of bachhan family.

it is better if she is at home and produce 2 or 3 junior / sub junior children of abhishek rather then doing any film in industry. no telent of acting , she have now.

worst movie, i ever seen
pls dont go to this movie and waste ur time and money

i am a great fan of maniratnam and was waiting for this movie for a long time. i booked the tickets on the first day itself. really stupid.......

apart from technical excellency, nothing is great here. they wasted prithiv and vickram.

comparing this our masala movie sura is somewhat good. make us to laugh and never made us to feel bore.

really a boring package.

If you hoped (like me) Mani Ratnam would improve on his film making, move away from usual stereotypes, and be bold enough to challenge ingrained stereotypes, forget all about it when it comes to Ravan(an)!

In his lately well-established trend, he chooses not 1 but 2 well-known stories and fuses them for his storyline! The film is thus a peculiar tale of Ramayan(a) meets Veerappan and the utterly unoriginal plot and role portrayals flit from one story to the other.

Combine this with 'tableau' like scenes, ultra theatrical unconvincing dialogues, 2 dimensional uninspiring characters, cringe worthy acting and ill timed comedy for the most part, and unremarkable music.

There is some obvious symbolism of characters (Karthik / Govinda as Hanuman, ‘Veera’s 2 brothers for ‘large’ Kumbakaran(a) and ‘wise’ Vibheeshan(a)), scenes (array of stones where Ragini calls out to her husband akin to bridge built by Ram(a) to reach Lanka), dialogue references (number 14 depicting Ram(a)’s banished years in the forest) and colours (ill-reputed black for ‘Veera’ and auspicious white / yellow / red for ‘Ragini’).

The only redeeming features were the beautiful scenery of Kerala and Aishwarya's costumes!

What a disaster! He couldn't have done worse if he'd tried...

Mani R has made a stunt film. I knew the film is no good from the way the posters and the logo were made. Yet I went to watch for MR's sake and for nothing else. Its actually painful to watch a movie of this sort. Violence from the first frame to the last. Aish Roy is pushed and shoved with a bloody face in tattered clothes all thru the film. The over rated A R Rahman with his usual banal tunes that dissapears from the charts in less than one month is in his normal form.

Has movie makers forgotten that films are more story and art than technology?

Ravanan is the latest addition to a long list of absurd movies of recent times : Renigunta, Dasavadharam, Ayirathil Oruvan, Sivaji, Chandramukhi.....

I should say Ravanan is now added in the list of worthless movies.....

Even I feel, there was some story line in Samurai - wonderful movie, same kind of action, location, etc have been copied here too....

Dialogue is the worst part here....done by Sughasini. Better she can stop such kind of trials.

Normally Movies are to watch and it should have some story line, pakka direction, etc. Only for enjoying the sceneries, technology, etc, better we can get more at Discovery and National Geographic Channels.

I think, now it is the time for Maniratnam has to accept his failure and learn again about story choosing, direction, dialogues, etc. from the start...may be he can get some tips from young directors like Sasikumar.

He is really outdated!!!

Hey from my small age (5 yrs), every time whenever a manisir film releases there is always a mixed reaction with the audience. Some use to say great and some use to worst but after sometimes the audience who said worst will be saying its a good movie and he is great. It's the same ppl who told roja and bombay worst movie ever are appreciating the movie now.He always has this type of review.I think ppl r always exptng a similar film like previous and disappointed when mani does a different one. This means he is totally different from one movie to another. When Guru was released some said boring, but after ravan they r saying guru
is fantastic. I don't think anythink bad in this movie,t ppl who doesn't like this movie are the persons who r living in metro city and even doesn't know what is happening in village or jungle esp North indians .It is a huge hit in South india bcoz vikram has outclassed abhi as veera in tamil and also prithviraj as dev in hindi.Hey try to see all type of movies and always don't expect lavish or stylish films.

****>>>>>>>>>>> However, mani have all right to say that beera [RAVANA] was not a bad guy it dosen't mean that he can also say that dev [RAMA] was bad guy. In our culture it's very difficult to create Ideal; in fact, we got very few. In the movie sanjeevni [HANUMAN] had been shown drinking alcohol is not a good thing for our new generation, who think and had being taught that Hanuman is a epic hero. Especially, in todya's world when it's too difficult differentiate between true and untrue, this kind of sick mantality (except LOVE factor) makes it more harder to keep believing in truth. Apart from all this just think onece, if the Abhishek were plaing role of dev-Inspector; what would be the impact of the movie. And for Mani this movie can be considered as down fall in selecting subject. All in all, this movie content some unsuitable thoughts which can be harmful for some of our basic norms.<<<<<<<<<<**** [-]

worst movie. i think tamil film directors (except a few) r busy these days in proving who is the worst director. mani sir v had really high hopes on you. u let us down. sura is anyday a better movie than ravanan. this script doesnot deserve so much of hardwork and 2 years of time to make. everyones hardwork is wasted becasue of a weak and a confused story line. Suhasini madam give yourself a big minus for your dialogues in the TV show you anchor. Tamil industry is not short of good writers. pls do not try this again. Vikram also equally disappoints. Aish would have been more suitable for some mother character in the movie. not able to hide her age. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY, BETTER WATCH NATGEO CHANNEL AT HOME. (Prabhu & Karthick - "ENNA KODUMA SIR IDHU")
