Sweet revenge may well come Maple Films way with the release of The Spirit, a dark tinged thrill ride steeped in comic lore. Taken from the hit comic books written by Will Eisner crafty director Frank Miller (Sin City) effectively brings these graphic stories to the big screen with a bang. Forget what some high brow critics have said coming down rather hard, unceremoniously on this movie. My advice to these well paid critics is take a deep breath and relax. Movie goers should always make up their own minds about whether or not to see a particular film. Fair-minded folks with open minds should fully enjoy the send-up nature of this blast of a movie, now unfolding at Scotiabank Theatre, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C.

Frank Miller has a good eye for bringing new worlds to the screen. Here we have a renegade cop pretending to be some supernatural spirit out to save the city he loves. Called The Spirit, our crime crusader roams the rooftops and evil lairs of the city. Number one enemy of Spirit is a ruthless cad called The Octopus. Aided and abetted by a gang of thugs Mr. Octopus will spare no effort to rid the planet of the Spirit.

Expect lots of fights, ridiculous macho dialogue, sly innuendos and the like in this fast paced comic escapade. There is an obvious dark tone to the film and some plot points may be a bit confusing but that doesn’t take away anything from the scintillating atmosphere Miller has created here. The Spirit soars with all the absurd fight scenes and femme fatales. And for the record, our crime fighter has quite the past and what seems like a very healthy appetite for the ladies.

Leave your minds at home and enjoy this guilty pleasure, made all the more watchable for Samuel L. Jackson’s (SHAFT) ridiculous musings as The Octopus. Just like Jackson achieved internet cult status with the Vancouver shot Snakes on a Plane, again he steals the show as the wise-cracking, Nazi worshipping Octopus. Full of drive and athletic prowess is the man under the mask, Gabriel Macht (The Good Shepherd) who ushers in a new world of comic icons as the caped crusader, well minus the cape with a red tie included for show. Women abound in this grimy world with Eva Mendes (Hitch) particularly hot as the appropriately named Sand Saref.

Any way you slice it, The Spirit is quality B-grade fare and should be popular among the action crowd.
