When my father was posted in Guwahati, then my brother, my Mom and I came extremely close. We lived and depended on each other and were nurturing a relationship that meant togetherness, growth and trust. That nothing could come between us was a surety that developed cracks, though only for a few hours. The momentous year was the millennium year and momentous reason had nothing to do directly with any of us but it revolved around choices, a matter of pride and honour. Okay it was not even that big a deal, we started with what was suppose to end like a discussion but ended as an argument. Three of us were having our pick from the several contestants who adorned the stage during Femina Miss India 2000. I vouched for the ethereal beauty Lara Dutta and became the proud winner of the argument that fetched us nothing more than two hours of fighting. Looking at her I wondered on the partiality that the Almighty can sometimes do. She had everything a man or for that matter a woman would want but even as she makes you feel small without even knowing you can’t help but admire her perfection of drop-dead-gorgeous looks and a brain that can put the best to shame. Her natural progression was towards films and her first movie saw her with the stunt-king Akshay Kumar and fellow Femina contestant Priyanka Chopra in ‘Andaaz’. She stood her ground and got noticed as much for her acting as for her skimpy clothes and she was tagged as the next big thing after she won the best debutant award for the movie. With her first movie she joined the league of the Juhi’s and the Bipasha’s who are few successful model turned actresses. But with her following movies she found it increasingly difficult to keep up the momentum and live up to the hopes. Her career of 8 years has not given a kitty full of awards but she has certainly had her share of pride and applause with Masti (2004), Kaal (2005), No Entry (2005), Bhagam Bhag (2006) and Partner (2007). The lady has a lot of potential and talent that is striving to come to the forefront. A couple of right decisions and choices backed by luck to get her the recognition she so clearly deserves. The Indian Film Industry is a tough place to be in, u either do well or you keep struggling waiting for that lucky break to come your way which would be the answer and the end to all criticism. Like said earlier, Lara only needs to strengthen her presence, a lot of which has already been accepted and appreciated.
