You know there are times when you believe that a certain thought, a certain moment will come true. You might not always wait for it to come true but when it does your respect for your judgment shoots several notches up. That you almost have the ability to predict even if the prediction turns out to be correct 1 out of 50 times a self hi-five comes a natural. This moment of prediction happened when I saw Preity Zinta in the Perk ad for the first time. This was followed up by her bubbly presence in the Lyril ad. The way the naughty looking, full of life girl jumped under the water took my attention and I felt she will one day make it big. Today as one of the leading actresses of Bollywood the lady has proved me right (not that it matters?) by taking Indian Cinema by storm. Born on July 31, 1975 the 33 year old actress made a sensational debut opposite none other than Sharukh Khan in ‘Dil Se’ which won her the Best Female Debut Award. Sending a bright ray of among the Indian Directors who are always on a look out for fresh young talent the lady got her first major break in ‘Soldier’ opposite Bobby Deol which also won her rave reviews. At an early stage of her career she played an unwed mother in ‘Kya Kehna’ which though got her critical appreciation she wasn’t encouraged on a personal front and she had to bear the brunt of the orthodox Indians. A firm believer of her actions, she stood up and showed maturity way beyond her age while dealing with the people who had issues head-on. Along came ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ a movie which saw her lose oodles of weight and look hot. The movie did extremely well and it was followed by another commercial hit ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ which won her, her first major award Filmfare Best Actress Award. Then there was no looking back, not that there ever was, the lady always looked tailor-made for the silver screen ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ only reiterated the fact. Playing the silent but strong Pakistani woman in ‘Veer-Zara’ the lady booked her berth in the Indian Film History as one of the most gorgeous looking women. Her off-screen persona of a sexy, savvy and present day independent woman won her movies like Salaam Namaste and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna which saw her depict the today woman with panache and full of substance. A woman of substance and meaning Preity has always delivered powerful and thought-proving cinema always by her own belief in the project. This can be attributed as one of the reasons for the intense realism that she lends to each of her character. She lends a part of her to every portrayal, be it the petite Zara in ‘Veer-Zara’, the ultra-modern Rhea Saran of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, the disciplined Naina Catherine Kapur of Kal Ho Naa Ho or the steel-determined Romila Dutta of Lakshya. Her every character has a bit of her only in real life she is all of this with an amazing effervescence about her at all times. The lovely lady has a come a long way but has an even longer journey to cover. Here is wishing her luck in all her endeavours and roles whether in reel-life or real life.
