With his looks he could won a supermodel pageant. With his lineage he could have started easy an actor. But the man wanted to have his own territory to rule, established and maintained by him. So Farhan Akhtar became a director and boy, we did not know whether to be glad or sad. Because if he was an actor, we would have missed out on his amazing directorial prowess, movies which are made with a lot of heart, logic and soul and which each time land much above our expectations! Born on January 9, 1974 he is the son of well-known scriptwriter, poet, and lyricist Javed Akhtar and renowned screenplay writer Honey Irani and his stepmother is the actress Shabana Azmi. He is also the cousin of Bollywood film director and choreographer Farah Khan. He announced his arrival as not just another director but come-of-age, modern, experimental and risk-taking director. His 2001 debut in the form of the hit ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ proved to be a trend-setting movie, paving way for smarter and ahead of its times cinema and also proved to be a re-launch of sorts for Saif Ali Khan. For many it is one of the best movies ever made in Bollywood. With a jumpstart like this, he moved on to his next venture Lakshya, with Hrithik Roshan which won critical acclaim. He then directed a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan film, Don titled Don - The Chase Begins Again which starred Shahrukh Khan in the title role. A huge hit adding another feather to his well-illustrated cap. And after his successful stint as a director which is sure to continue, till the creative bug in him continues to grow, he will be seen acting and singing in ‘Rock On’. Directed and written by Abhishek Kapoor the movie has already generated enough buzz to open to packed theatres throughout the nation.
Indeed the man of the moment, Fahan carries an aura that makes us believe that with his presence things can’t but go right. His stability as a person and openness as a professional are traits that make him on of the most liked directors both inside the bollywood fraternity and outside it. He is one of the best things to have happened to Bollywood, when the most it needed was change and that was brought in by a fresh wave lead by the man himself!
